Everything’s quiet when I walk into town. My feet were bruised and my shoes were gone somewhere. My clothes were torn, but I still had strength to walk on. I had somewhere to get to. I went to touch a stone wall on a building, but my hand goes through the building instead. My vision clears a little bit, and all I see is sand. Great. I thought I was done with walking across the desert. I sigh and clear the sun out of my eyes with my hand. I squint and squeal when I see a building in the distant. It was probably another mirage, but I didn’t want to lose my hope. I continue to walk instead. When I get to the building, I touch the wall and feel a smooth cool surface. It was real! I run up the steps of the building and knock at the door. I look around me to see a cross on the front of the driveway. It was a church. A tall boy that’s probably a little bit older than me opens the door. He looks at me up and down and opens the door wider to let me in.

“Um.” I tug at my scarf that rips open when I touch it.

“There's a room down the hall. There's clothes in the closet. Restroom on your left.” The boy shrugs and walks to the other door and closes the door behind him when he goes in. I slowly walked to the door. Cautiously, I turn the door knob. Inside, it was actually quite nice. It was like a small hotel bedroom. I open the closet, and sure enough, there were clean clothes inside. They were quite boring, but they were comfortable. After I take a shower and change clothes, I explore the church. There were other bedrooms and a place to pray, but the most important one is the kitchen. When I found the kitchen, I immediately go to the fridge and find something to cook up, but it was empty. I sighed, my hope rapidly disappearing.

“Looking for some food?” The boy appears behind me. I nod. He goes to a cupboard and I gasp in surprise when I see a mini fridge inside. The boy takes out some meat and rice and cooks them, while I hungrily stare at the food. In only fifteen minutes, the boy carries two huge plates heaped full of food. I take my plate, mumbling a thanks and finish the whole plate in minutes. I stare at the bowl, wanting more, but the boy shakes his head.

“If you eat too much, you’ll throw up. I bet you're actually already full.” The boy kindly smiles at me. I only nod, grabbing a cup a water from the sink. I gulped the water down, and then walk to my room, and then to bed. The bed was soft and was the best bed I've ever slept on in the past 5 months. I sink into the plushness and fall asleep in minutes.

When I wake up, I'm in the floor of a busy city. People are bustling around me, getting groceries or going to work. I stand up, realizing I'm wearing nothing and my stomach yearns for food.

‘You okay, ma'am?” A man looks down to me. My hands instantly wraps around my body, and I wriggle uncomfortably.

“Ma'am? I won't hurt you. Who did this to you?” The man calmly puts his jacket around my arms. Thank god I wore my bra and undies.

“Was a church around here somewhere?” I ask instead. The man looks at me quizzically, but answers my question anyways.

“Yes. Long time ago. A man lived here all by himself in the middle of the desert when the city wasn't built yet. He founded this city, but apparently, he killed whoever that came by. Those people usually went to his church to get a rest from walking in the desert. I heard that a lot of people get lost here. He killed them in their sleep.” My mouth drops open.

“But first, ma'am, you need some clothes and food.”
